A short guide to Over/Under 2.5

What the market is

Over 2.5 is the right call when a match ends with three goals or more after 90 minutes plus stoppage time; Under 2.5 when it ends with two or fewer. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not count. The half goal means every match lands on one side: there is no tie.

Odds and implied probability

Decimal odds turn into a probability with one division: 1 ÷ odds. Odds of 1.80 imply about 56%, odds of 2.20 about 45%. Add both sides of a market and you get a little over 100%: the extra is the bookmaker’s margin. Reading a price means comparing the chance it implies with your own estimate.

What drives goals

Attacking and defensive form over recent matches; expected goals (xG), the quality of the chances a team creates and concedes; home advantage; missing strikers or defenders; and what the match means — a side that needs a win attacks, a side happy with a draw often does not. League style matters too, as the table above shows.

Common mistakes

Reading too much into one big score; using a league average for a match between two very different teams; ignoring the line-ups announced an hour before kick-off; and chasing losses after a miss. Short samples are noisy: ten matches say little.

How to read our match pages and track record

Each match page shows form, head-to-head, the table, expected goals and team news. Most matches get no pick: we only make one when the numbers are clear, and every pick is sealed with an independent timestamp before kick-off. The track record lists every settled pick, hits and misses, so you can judge us on the full record.

Play responsibly

Football is unpredictable, and no analysis changes that. Only bet if you are 18 or over (or the legal age where you live), set a budget you can afford to lose, and stop when it stops being fun. If gambling is causing you problems, the helpline at the foot of this page can help.

Frequently asked questions

What does Over 2.5 goals mean?
The match ends with three or more goals in total after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Two goals or fewer is Under 2.5.
Does extra time count for Over/Under 2.5?
No. Over/Under 2.5 is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time; extra time and penalty shoot-outs are not counted. The statistics on this page follow the same rule.
Which leagues have the most goals?
It changes from season to season. The table on this page shows each competition's goals per match and Over 2.5 rate from this season's finished matches, and it updates after every matchday.
How do I turn odds into a probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds: 2.00 is 50%, 1.60 about 63%, 2.50 is 40%. The two sides of a market add up to slightly more than 100% because of the bookmaker’s margin.
Do you make an Over/Under pick on every match?
No. Most matches get no pick: we only make one when the numbers are clear. Every pick is sealed before kick-off and settled in public, hit or miss.
Where can I see how your picks have done?
On the track record: every settled pick, hits and misses, with each hit rate next to a simple baseline it has to beat. Nothing is deleted.
