A short guide to the match result market
What the market is
Three outcomes: the home side wins (1), a draw (X) or the away side wins (2). It is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so in a cup tie extra time and penalties do not count: a match level after 90 minutes is a draw.
Odds and implied probability
1 ÷ decimal odds gives the probability a price implies: 2.00 is 50%, 3.40 about 29%, 4.00 is 25%. The three outcomes add up to a little over 100%: the extra is the bookmaker’s margin. Reading a price means comparing the chance it implies with your own estimate.
What drives results
Recent form and the quality of chances created and conceded (expected goals, xG) say more than the table alone. Home advantage is real but smaller than many think, as the home win rates above show. Injuries, suspensions, rotation before a cup match and what each side needs from the game all matter.
Common mistakes
Backing big clubs out of habit; forgetting the draw; reading a long unbeaten run as a promise; and ignoring the line-ups announced an hour before kick-off. A clear favourite still drops points often enough to matter.
How to read our match pages and track record
Each match page shows form, head-to-head, the table, expected goals and team news. Most matches get no pick: we only make one when the numbers are clear, and every pick is sealed with an independent timestamp before kick-off. The track record lists every settled pick, hits and misses, so you can judge us on the full record.
Play responsibly
Football is unpredictable, and no analysis changes that. Only bet if you are 18 or over (or the legal age where you live), set a budget you can afford to lose, and stop when it stops being fun. If gambling is causing you problems, the helpline at the foot of this page can help.
Frequently asked questions
- What does 1X2 mean?
- 1 is a home win, X a draw and 2 an away win. The match result is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
- Does extra time count in the match result market?
- No. Only 90 minutes plus stoppage time count: a cup tie that is level after 90 minutes is a draw in this market, whatever happens in extra time or on penalties.
- How often do home teams win?
- It depends on the league and the season. The table on this page shows each competition's home win, draw and away win rates from this season's finished matches, and it updates after every matchday.
- How do I turn odds into a probability?
- Divide 1 by the decimal odds: 2.00 is 50%, 3.20 about 31%, 5.00 is 20%. The three outcomes add up to slightly more than 100% because of the bookmaker’s margin.
- Do you make a match result pick on every match?
- No. Most matches get no pick: we only make one when the numbers are clear. Every pick is sealed before kick-off and settled in public, hit or miss.
- Where can I see how your picks have done?
- On the track record: every settled pick, hits and misses, with each hit rate next to a simple baseline it has to beat. Nothing is deleted.
